Reasoned. Rigorous. Real.
A Framework for Evaluating Claims with Reason and Evidence
HALTS Framework™ – Overview and Definitions
HALTS Framework™ is a structured, multi-disciplinary tool for evaluating truth claims — whether found in ancient texts, cultural traditions, modern media, or everyday conversation. It is designed to help us think critically about what we believe and why we believe it.
Rather than accepting ideas based on authority, tradition, intuition, or faith alone, HALTS invites us to examine claims through five objective categories of evidence and reasoning:
- H – Historical
- A – Axeological
- L – Logical
- T – Theological/Worldview
- S – Scientific
Each component of the framework asks: Does this belief hold up when tested by this kind of evidence?
The goal of HALTS is not to attack faith or ridicule belief. Its aim is to evaluate the integrity of claims — whether religious, ideological, cultural, or casual — using rigorous, consistent, and demonstrable standards.
It is not a weapon to maliciously dismantle belief, but a lens through which to refine our understanding of the world. In doing so, HALTS helps expose error, affirm truth, and promote intellectual honesty — wherever the evidence may lead.
Statement of Purpose
The HALTS Framework™ provides a clear, accessible method for thinking critically about truth claims. If a belief is true, it will survive scrutiny. If it is not, no amount of faith can make it real.
